Whenever people see my laptop -- the first thing they see is KDE -- and they wonder what this is. This takes a bit of explaining --- especially to those who have not even heard of UNIX, or OS based on it like OSX, and iPhone!
Well, my story starts about four or five years ago. At that time I was using Windows 95SE, and I was in the process of switching to Windows XP. Switch went without any major problem, however, I did notice that many new application require "key activation" -- and could only be done by online -- and in some case via phone (normal office hours). Beside this annoyance, I would need to spend additional money an anti-virus, anti firewall, and all other sorts of anti-malware software just to be able to perform a basic task safely.
I was complaining about this to someone -- and I remember one of my friend mention Linux. I also read a review of Linux which convinced me that I should try it. I started with Corel version -- Debian based OS, and it came with Word Perfect. It didn't work as the CNET Reviews had suggested, and I reinstall Windows. However, time to time I did play around with it. Few months later I upgraded my computer. This gave me an opportunity to partition my hard drive, and this way I was able to install Linux.
Things were not as smooth as I had hoped, however, with the help of a Linux community I was able to use Linux as my main OS, and eventually move my entire work to Linux. In the end I learned enough to compile a custom kernel for my PC.
I will conclude that Linux is safer then Windows.
